Bring Home an Affectionate New Companion Today
Victorian Bulldogs are referred to as People’s Dogs for a good reason: they’re super affectionate and thrive on human interaction. They have classic Bulldog looks with the cute rolls and a patient attitude but they’re generally more active than their cousin, the English Bulldog. The Victorian Bulldog is a medium-large dog, muscular and powerful, but don’t let the looks fool you – this is a sweetheart of a dog. If you’re looking to add a Victorian Bulldog to your family, we have puppies available for adoption at Peak Legacy Ranch in Peyton, CO. History
The Victorian Bulldog was developed in the 1980s as a healthier version of the English Bulldog. This breed is a cross between the English Bulldog, Bull Terrier, Bull Mastiff, and the Staffordshire Bull Terrier. Their ancestry can be traced back to bandogges, butcher’s dogges, and molossoids that were used in England back in the 1700s and 1800s and used mostly for the inhumane act of bull and bear baiting. The English Bulldog was brought to the United States in 1880. Since the Victorian Bulldog is still considered a new breed, it has yet to be recognized by the AKC.
Temperament
It’s hard to find a breed that’s more loving and gentle than the Victorian Bulldog. They make great family pets as they love being around children and other pets, thriving on human affection and attention. They’re also extremely loyal and protective of their family. The Victorian Bulldog is easy to train as they love learning new things. Early socialization is very important as they are alert pups, making great watchdogs.
Environment
The Victorian Bulldog thrives in moderate climates. As with the entire Bulldog breed, they do not do well in extreme temperatures, either hot or cold. Being out in hot weather for any length of time can lead to breathing problems. They are not considered working dogs; in fact, they’re quite unenergetic and do well in apartments or small houses with cozy yards.
Exercise
Victorian Bulldogs require only moderate exercise to maintain their physique and prevent them from gaining weight. A 20-40 minute daily in the coolest time of the day (early morning or late afternoon) is best. They also do well with playtime in a secure area. If you’re taking them out in the yard to play, make sure to bring plenty of water and consider a cooling jacket to prevent overheating. Victorian Bulldogs enjoy mental stimulation like interactive toys or puzzle games. Be sure to keep an eye on their breathing during any kind of exercise as they only require moderate activity levels.
Grooming
With their short coats, Victorian Bulldogs are easy to groom and only require brushing with a firm bristle brush once a week to remove loose hair. Bathing should take place once a month or every other month – make sure to avoid over-washing and check their wrinkles for dirt or moisture build-up. Their sweet little faces should be wiped with a damp cloth daily. Dental hygiene is very important to maintain, so be sure to contact your vet about when to set up a dental cleaning.
