Add This Loyal, Intelligent Dog to Your Family Today
The Schnoodle, the most fun dog name to say, is a hybrid breed of the Schnauzer and the Poodle. Depending on the size of the parent breeds, the Schnoodle can range anywhere from 6 pounds (Toy) to 70 pounds (the high end of the Giant). No matter their size, the Schnoodle is a highly intelligent breed and is very affectionate. They’re a great choice for allergy-sufferers with their low-shedding coat, which is medium-length and dense. These pups are easy to train as they love to learn, are playful, and thrive on all social interactions. History
Emerging as a designer breed in the U.S. in the 1980s, there is a theory that early Schnoodle-types were developed in England. They were known as Truffle Dogs as they specialized in gathering truffles. Not a lot is known about the Schnoodle history but their parent breeds both originated in Germany. The Poodle was known as a duck hunter and soon became quite popular in France while the Schnauzer seems to have originated in the 14th-16th centuries.
Temperament
The Schnoodle is a clever, obedient breed with a strong will who is highly people-oriented and loves human interaction. They are protective of their family, forming strong bonds with them, making them the ideal companion for singles, families with children, and seniors. Since the Schnoodle is highly treat- and praise-motivated, they are easy to train.
Environment
The Schnoodle is very adaptable and will thrive in various environments. Depending on their size, they will do well in a house with a yard or an apartment with regular outings. If they have a yard to run around and play in, make sure it’s secure as smaller sizes can squeeze through a fence and larger ones can jump shorter fences.
Exercise
45-60 minutes of exercise a day is recommended for the Schnoodle. A brisk walk combined with playtime such as fetch, chase, or interactive games is a great way to exercise these active pups. They also enjoy the fun challenge of agility training or interactive toys that allow them to problem-solve. Taking them to a dog park is also a great idea as they’re very social creatures and enjoy meeting new people and dogs.
Grooming
The Schnoodle requires regular grooming, including brushing 2-3 times a week to discourage matting. Professional grooming is suggested every 6 weeks, while bathing should happen every 4-6 weeks. Be careful not to over-bathe the Schnoodle as that can cause their skin to dry out. They will need regular nail trimming and ear cleaning. One thing to look out for are tear stains – you can use a warm washcloth to gently clean their eye area to help maintain their hygiene.
