History

The Saint Bernard breed traces its origins to the Great St. Bernard Pass in the Swiss Alps. In the 11th century, they were bred by monks at the hospice that catered to injured and lost travelers. The first Saint Bernards were acquired at the hospice between 1660-1670. They were descended from large regional farm dogs and Asiatic Mastiff-type breeds brought over by the Romans. The legendary Barry is the most famous Saint Bernard, reportedly rescuing over 40 people during his time. These gentle and dependable companions were recognized by the AKC in 1885. Fun fact: the Saint Bernard, while generally depicted wearing a barrel of brandy around their neck while rescuing people, never actually wore one.

Temperament

The Saint Bernard is a lovely, gentle dog, known for being calm and friendly. Of course, early training and socialization helps with these traits. Not unlike Nana from Peter Pan, Saint Bernards are watchful and have been known to babysit children since they have a neutral nurturing instinct. Care must be taken, however, as they can knock children over with their large size.

Environment

Bred for cold climates like the Swiss Alps, the Saint Bernard thrives in cooler temps and would do well in large, cool houses or oversized apartments. They struggle in hot weather and it’s recommended to give them access to cooling pads and fans to help keep them cool. They need to be able to head outdoors at their leisure and have a comfortable indoor space that can be kept cool year-round.
They also need access to plenty of fresh water, so a water fountain may be a good idea.

Exercise

These large pups only require moderate exercise, including daily walks of at least 30 minutes. These walks can be split up into two if needed. Saint Bernards enjoy short play sessions including fetch or puzzle toys to help mental stimulation. Low-impact activities in a cool environment are best, or you can take them swimming, which is great for their joints. Saint Bernards are happiest when working, so taking them cart-pulling or drafting is an ideal day of play for them.

Grooming

Saint Bernards have coats that differ in length but no matter how long it is, they should be brushed 3-4 times a week. During the shedding season, they will need to be brushed every day. A pin brush is ideal for pups with long hair while a rubber brush is best for medium to short hair. During the shedding season, a comb can be helpful to manage the large amounts of hair. Bathing is required only as necessary but usually once a month. They will require regular nail trimming every few weeks.
