Pomeranians Are the Epitome of Fluffy, Friendly Happiness
A favorite among royals and commoners alike, the tiny Pomeranian is a small companion breed that originally came from the European region. These highly energetic and intelligent companions are known for their compact size, fluffy coats, and spirited nature. Typically weighing between just 3 to 7 pounds, the Pom is one of the world’s most popular toy breeds. Covered in an extra layer of fluff that extends over the chest and shoulders, they are available in almost two dozen colors with various patterns and markings. Their intelligent and curious nature makes them easy to train, and their friendly personality makes them suitable companions for all, from singles looking for a furry roommate to robust families, and everything in between. With the right kind of exercise, they can do well in a house with a small yard or an apartment residence. History
The Pomeranian is a part of the Spitz family of dogs, which includes other breeds such as the Samoyed and the Alaskan Malamute. The Pom is the smallest breed of the group that descended from the German Spitz breed that was originally large enough to work as sled-pulling and shepherding dogs. There are paintings of Poms from as early as the 18th century, having been included in portraits of royalty such as the Prince of Wales. Queen Victoria even had a confirmation show put on, and it was the first show where Pomerians were ever presented, pushing their popularity to new heights.
Temperament
The Pomeranian breed is known for its loyal, affectionate, and ever-cheerful personality. Filled with a love for fun and interaction, this energetic breed enjoys all sorts of games and adventures. Poms are incredibly alert and clever, making them easy to train as great watchdogs. They are very lively in nature with their playful curiosity providing everyone around them with endless entertainment. If socialized properly, they are great to have around other pets, strangers, and older children.
Environment
These popular pets are very adaptable and can adjust to living in various environments, from houses to apartments. As long as they receive enough physical and mental stimulation, they are a fun and interactive companion. Due to their small size, they can find ample entertainment in small quarters, and enjoy both indoor and outdoor play. As long as they’re surrounded by a nurturing environment, their energetic nature will appeal to all.
Exercises
The Pomeranian needs a moderate amount of exercise, about 30-60 minutes of activity which can be broken into multiple walks throughout the day. Due to their compact size, they are satisfied with many indoor activities and games. They are an independent bunch and don’t always take to being a lap dog as they prefer to move around. Exposure to proper socializing with other dogs and animals will help keep a friendly temperament. Proper training will make them very suitable for singles, couples, or seniors as they do not require an extensive amount of care and attention.
Grooming
Their double coat is their trademark feature with the longer ruff around the neck and chest that forms a frill. In order to keep their coats clean and comfortable, daily brushing is recommended, or a thorough brush-through once a week. This will help prevent matting from occurring, and remove any dirt or bacteria that can gather in their fur. Regular visits to the groomers for clippings and bathing should occur every four to six weeks to help address sensitive areas like the eyes and ears. Attention to ear and dental hygiene is also important to maintain overall health.
