Brighten Your Life With an Affectionate New Friend

The Pomapoo is a designer breed, a mix of the Pomeranian and the Toy Poodle. These cutie-pies are known for their small stature, generally weighing 5-15 pounds. They have fluffy coats in an array of colors and are famed for being a friendly and affectionate breed, although sometimes the Poodle can dominate the personality, making them slightly reserved. One thing you can always count on from a Pomapoo is a sweet smile to greet you when you come through the door and a lively personality to match. This breed is highly intelligent and they learn quickly so training is fairly easy. They’re also touted as being hypoallergenic if they inherit the Poodle coat. If you’re looking to adopt one of these spirited, sweet puppies, contact us today at Peak Legacy Ranch in Peyton, CO and we’ll help you get the process going.

History

The Pomapoo, a cross between the Pomeranian and the Toy Poodle, originated in the United States in the 1980s and 1990s as breeders were looking to create a small, low-shedding dog. The Pomeranian originated in Germany and once Queen Charlotte brought the court dogs to England in the 18th century, they were developed into the size we’re familiar with today. The Toy Poodle, a smaller version of the Standard Poodle, was bred as a companion dog in Europe. The Pomapoo is the ideal family pet for anyone looking for a lively, smart companion who doesn’t need a lot of space.

Temperament

If you’re looking for a friendly, affectionate dog that thrives on family time, then the Pomapoo is a great choice. It’s important to socialize them early so they don’t bark at strangers. This loyal pup is great with kids and is playful and energetic, but it is recommended that they are supervised around young children as they’re a delicate breed. The Pomapoo is highly intelligent, which makes them easy to train.

Environment

Being such a small breed, the Pomapoo does well in a variety of environments, including apartments and small houses. They enjoy outside time, but as they have a small stature, they are able to squeeze through fences, so make sure the yard is secure. The Pomapoo is also highly susceptible to temperature and needs to avoid hot weather as much as possible. They are unsuited to be outdoors for an extended period of time and should be supervised when outside.

Exercise

The Pomapoo is happiest when they get exercise and mental stimulation. It’s recommended that they get a 20-30 minute walk twice a day, but be careful to make sure it’s not too hot outside as they are sensitive to hot temps. They enjoy playtime as well, especially fetch, tug-of-war, or interactive games. Giving them time to run outdoors in a safe and cool yard is also a great way for your Pomapoo to get daily exercise. It’s important not to overdo walks due to their small size as it can cause joint or back issues.

Grooming

With their thick hair, Pomapoos need to be brushed every day or every other day to prevent mats and tangles. It’s important to pay special attention to the ears, tail, and underbelly as those areas are highly prone to mats. Use a high-quality brush to remove loose hairs and distribute natural oils. Your pup should be professionally groomed every 4-6 weeks as well as receive regular teeth brushing and nail trims. Baths are only needed when necessary and be sure to wipe their eyes to prevent tear stains.
