History

Spaniels, as their name suggests, originated in Spain and there is mention of them as far back as 300 A.D. in Wales, so this is a breed with a well documented history. In 1902, England’s Kennel Club officially recognized the English Springer Spaniel for the first time. They made their way across the Atlantic in 1913 when an English Springer Spaniel was imported to Canada and within the decade they had become popular throughout America. In the 1940s, distinctions began to emerge between field-bred and show-bred dogs and the two types are now distinct. The English Springer Spaniel remains one of the most popular breeds among those recognized by the American Kennel Club.

Temperament

Known for being friendly and eager to please, English Springer Spaniels are also intelligent and quick to learn, making them easy to train. They are an extremely sociable breed that gets along well with children, other pets and even strangers. Having been bred as hunters, they require a good bit of exercise and love the chance to run. They may bark at strangers, but they are not well suited as guard dogs as they are much more interested in becoming friends than warding off threats.

Environment

As medium sized dogs, English Springer Spaniels are adaptable to almost any environment including apartment living. Since they are such naturally social dogs they don’t like to be left alone for long periods of time and if they are living in close quarters they’ll need to get out and stretch their legs in order to burn off excess energy. Unlike some breeds, they don’t tend to attach themselves to one particular person. They love everyone they are around and like nothing more than being in the center of family activity.

Exercise

In general, this breed is high energy and requires ample exercise but specific exercise requirements will vary depending on their type. Field Springers require more activity than Show Springers. If you have a good size fenced-in yard, your Springer will be happy spending plenty of time running around while you are engaged in outdoor activities like gardening or grilling. Occasional one or two mile walks will also help them to burn off excess energy. With waterproof double coats, Springers also love swimming, which can be another great way to ensure that they are getting plenty of exercise.

Grooming

English Springer Spaniels have a medium length flat or wavy topcoat and a short, soft and dense undercoat with feathering on the ears, chest, legs and belly. They can come in a variety of color mixes, with Show Springers having more color and Field Springers having more white to make them easier to spot in the field. You’ll need to brush your Springer at least three times a week to prevent tangles and matting. They are moderate shedders, so regular brushing will also help you to stay ahead of the excess fur. You should also check and clean their ears weekly to prevent infections.
