History

This is a newer designer breed and as a mixed breed it is not formally recognized by the American Kennel Club. It stems from two breeds with unique histories. As its name might suggest, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel was initially bred as a companion for royalty and is even said to take its name from King Charles I and II. The Cocker Spaniel is one of the older breeds, having originated as a hunting gun-dog. They have long been prized for their intelligence.

Temperament

Combining the best of both parent breeds, the Cockalier is a gentle, friendly dog that gets along well with everyone, including small children, and usually does well with other pets given the proper socialization. It is also known to be extremely intelligent and eager to please, which makes it fairly easy to train. This makes it the ideal choice for novice dog owners. It is almost never aggressive, preferring instead to cuddle up and enjoy the company of its family or engage in a high energy play session.

Environment

Its medium size means it can adapt easily to almost any environment, including apartment living. If you do live in an apartment it’s important to remember that this is also a high energy breed that will require regular exercise so you’ll need to ensure plenty of opportunities to stretch its legs and burn off that excess energy. At heart, though, this is a breed that loves nothing more than being with its family, whether that’s in a large house, apartment or tiny home.

Exercise

In general, Cockaliers have moderate exercise needs. Regular walks and play sessions will usually be enough for this breed. As highly intelligent pups, it’s also important that they get plenty of mental stimulation with interactive games or puzzle toys. They also take quite well to training so it should be fairly easy to keep them occupied.

Grooming

Their medium length, curly coat requires regular brushing in order to prevent matting. Usually once or twice a week brushing sessions are all that is needed and their gentle disposition makes grooming an easier undertaking than it is for many other breeds. While they are generally hearty dogs, they don’t do well in colder weather so you’ll want to put a coat on your Cockalier when you go out for a walk on winter days. You should only bathe them occasionally and also remember to check their ears to ensure proper hygiene, which can be an issue with floppy eared breeds.
