### History
The Chih-A-Pom, also known as the Pomchi, Pomahuahua or Chimeranian, is a relatively new mixed breed, likely developed when people sought a compact breed well suited to living in smaller spaces. Their parent breeds, the Pomeranian and Chihuahua, have long histories. The Pomeranian is a member of the Spitz family which originated in Germany. They became a favorite of Queen Victoria, who was initially responsible for breeding them down to their present toy stature. Believed to be descendents of the ancient Toltec breed called the Techichi, the Chihuahua originated in Mexico and eventually became one of the most popular breeds in America.
Temperament
Chih-A-Poms are known to be affectionate and loyal dogs, often taking a particular liking to an individual human member of their family. They love nothing more than to snuggle up in their favorite human’s lap and be cuddled. As a result, they can be wary of strangers and even other family members. They are clever dogs who love to play, which makes them a great family dog, however they don’t do well around small children since their small size means they can easily be hurt. They are very alert and are prone to barking at any noise, which can make them great watchdogs.
Environment
Their tiny size makes the Chih-A-Pom the perfect fit for apartments, tiny homes and other small spaces. Though they do enjoy going outside and running around, they don’t require a large yard and are just as happy inside. Their tendency to bark a lot can be an issue if you live in an apartment but with proper early training this can be kept in check. You’ll also need to keep alert if you’re sharing a small space with your Chih-A-Pom as their need to be with their human can cause them to get underfoot at times.
Exercise
Chih-A-Poms are relatively low maintenance when it comes to exercise. They do have a lot of energy, which they need to work out regularly, but a good, vigorous bit of play time indoors is usually more than enough to satisfy their needs. If you do decide to take them for a walk, count on no more than 20-30 minutes at the most before they begin to tire or lose interest.
Grooming
While they are not heavy shedders, most Chih-A-Poms will shed at least twice a year. The amount of grooming your Chih-A-Pom needs will depend on the length of its coat. Longer and fluffier coats generally need brushing once or twice a week using a pin brush and a slicker brush and bathing every four to six weeks. Shorter coats will only require occasional brushing and bathing.
