Are you interested in adopting a Beagle?

Explorative and Inquisitive: You Might Even Say Snoopy

Active and curious, Beagles were trained to be scent hounds who let their noses lead them in their explorations. Their big brown or hazel eyes often take on a cute, pleading expression, melting the hearts of many Beagle owners. They have floppy ears and a short, tricolor coat that is usually some combination of white, tan, and black. Standard Beagles are medium-sized, and weigh around 20-30 pounds. These happy-go-lucky dogs are loyal companions who enjoy having company which makes them perfect family dogs. With their curious, clever, and energetic nature, they thrive on plenty of playtime and enjoy regular exercise. Their intelligence makes them easy to train, though they can be stubborn if they catch an interesting scent. Beagles do well with other dogs and types of pets and should be socialized early on to enhance their amiable personality. If you’re interested in adding a fun-loving member to your family, reach out to Peak Legacy Ranch for more information regarding the adoption process.

History

Beagles are thought to have descended from the Talbot Hounds, who were large, white scent hounds brought into Britain during the 11th century. Their name first appeared in English literature in the 1400s, and later on, even Queen Elizabeth I was known as a beagle enthusiast. These dogs began to make an appearance in America before the Civil War but weren’t established by the AKC until the 1880s. Though bred to be active hunting hound dogs, for centuries they have been cherished as much-loved companions.

Temperament

The nature of Beagles is to roam due to their very active and highly curious personality. Although stubborn, they respond well to positive reinforcement during training and are generally even-tempered and have eager-to-please personalities. Beagles thrive in highly social environments and do well with first-time dog owners of all types, such as singles, seniors, couples, and families. Their friendly temperament means they get along well with other pets and meet new people with an eager attitude.

Environment

Beagles are adaptable and are suitable for apartments or houses, provided they get enough exercise. They enjoy having their own space indoors, such as a puppy zone, crate, or dog bed. Due to their curious nature, they love to explore, so it’s also important to ensure any outdoor areas are properly secured to prevent undue wandering.

Exercises

Beagles are high-energy dogs that need about one to two hours of exercise daily. They enjoy taking multiple walks throughout the day, playing outside, or interacting with family members for some indoor fun and games. Beagles thrive on routine, so it is helpful to try and engage your rambunctious friend around the same time every day.

Grooming

While a short-haired dog, Beagles still need regular grooming in order to have healthy hygiene. Brushing should be done at least once a week, and it is recommended to bathe your Beagle once a month to prevent excessive hair loss and bad smells from developing. Regular nail trimming, ear cleaning, and teeth brushing are also recommended to keep your furry friend in the best of health.
