Bring a bundle of pure joy into your life with an Aussie Pom puppy
Combining the best qualities of its parent breeds, the Australian Shepherd and Pomeranian, the Aussie Pom is a little bundle of energy with extraordinary intelligence and a friendly disposition. The breed combines the unique coloration of the Australian Shepherd with the portability of the Pomeranian to give owners the best of both worlds. The result is a high energy dog who requires plenty of regular exercise and mental stimulation but can be a loving and loyal companion. Standing at just 10 to 15 inches tall and weighing between 15 to 30 pounds, these are dogs that live just as comfortably in a small apartment as a large home. Their fluffy coat can be either medium or short length, with the medium coat usually black, white, brown or merle and the short coat black, white, brown, orange, cream or a combination.
History
The Aussie Pom, a hybrid breed combining the Australian Shepherd and Pomeranian, has a history rooted in the growing trend of designer dogs. This breed emerged in recent decades as breeders sought to blend the intelligence and agility of the Australian Shepherd with the playful and compact nature of the Pomeranian. While its exact origins are unclear, the Aussie Pom gained popularity for its striking looks, often featuring a fluffy coat with vibrant patterns. This mix reflects the best traits of its parent breeds, appealing to families and individuals seeking a loyal, active, and affectionate companion.
Temperament
Originating from two parent breeds known for their intelligence, loyalty and active nature, the Aussie Pom is a high energy little pup who also loves curling up on the lap of their favorite human. They don’t do well when left alone for long periods of time and could engage in some destructive habits like chewing if they don’t get enough regular mental stimulation. Their personality can depend on which parent they take after the most. If they have more Aussie in them, they will require plenty of mental stimulation, if they lean more toward the Pomeranian they may be skittish when they meet new people and could become territorial.
Environment
The Aussie Pom thrives in an environment that balances activity and affection. This energetic and intelligent breed loves having space to play and explore, making a home with a secure backyard ideal. However, they can also adapt to apartment living if given daily exercise and mental stimulation through walks, games, or training sessions. Aussie Poms excel in homes where they are part of family activities, as they crave social interaction and companionship. A moderately active household in a temperate climate is perfect, ensuring their high energy levels and fluffy coat are well-managed.
Exercise
As a high energy breed, the Aussie Pom requires regular exercise to keep him happy, prevent boredom and give him an outlet for the natural herding instinct of the Australian Shepherd. Regular exercise is also essential to help prevent weight gain, a trait he inherits from both parent breeds. Your Aussie Pom will require at least one good half hour to hour long walk per day with a few shorter walks and active play sessions mixed in. Their exceptional intelligence makes them easy to train so they are good candidates for all sorts of dog sports and activities like agility training.
Grooming
The Aussie Pom has a fluffy coat inherited from both parent breeds, which makes this a less than ideal breed for allergy sufferers. Fortunately, caring for their coat is fairly simple, usually requiring a good brushing once or twice a week as well as regular baths, though Aussie Poms with medium length coats may also need occasional visits to a professional groomer. You’ll also want to check their ears for pests and dirt daily and brush their teeth daily too, since they can be prone to dental issues inherited from the Pomeranian.
