Are you interested in adopting a Siberian Husky?

The Siberian Is Smart, Social, Vocal, and Versatile

Siberian Huskies are intelligent, playful, and friendly dogs who love to socialize. They are classic northern dogs that need extra care in the heat, but their largest size is around 60 pounds, making them much smaller than their Alaskan Malamute cousins. Siberian Huskies are beautiful dogs with various black marks around their almond-shaped eyes and otherwise white faces; oftentimes their eye color is blue, brown, or a combination of both. They are easy dogs to keep but were bred for running, so they should get a good run a couple of times a week. These dogs love human companionship and enjoy having a job to do, even if it’s as simple as joining you for a jog. This breed doesn’t bark but does tend to howl, and if left alone too much they can be diggers and chewers. With firm, gentle training early on and proper socializing, these super-friendly dogs do well with other pets and are perfect companions for singles, couples, and families. If you’re looking for an energetic, pack-minded, and fun-loving companion, reach out to Peak Legacy Ranch in Peyton, CO for more information about adopting an addition to your family.

History

Siberian Huskies are one of the oldest breeds, dating back to over 3,000 years ago, and were bred by the Chukchi tribe of northeast Asia. The Chukchi were a nomadic tribe, thus the Siberian Huskies were bred to help them travel as sled pullers across icy terrain, which is why the breed is such strong runners with thick coats. They were imported to America in 1909 by a Russian fur trader to participate in a dog-sled race, with their performance overturning expectations of the time. In the following year, multiple teams of Siberian Huskies cemented their reputation as mainstay sled dogs by winning 1st, 2nd, and 4th place, with first place shattering the all-time speed record at that time. While most of today’s Siberian Huskies are cherished family pets, many Siberian Huskies are still sled dogs who participate in local races and even enjoy skijoring with their owners.

Temperament

Siberian Huskies are energetic, intelligent, and playful dogs that are best suited for owners with active lifestyles. This friendly, outgoing breed craves company and loves spending time with other dogs and human companions. Siberian Huskies do have an independent side that can lead to mischievous explorations, so it’s important to have a strongly secured area. While they do not bark, they do howl at times, often for no apparent reason. Their strong sense of prey drive means that it’s important to be careful around wild animals and other, smaller pets at home.

Environment

Siberian Huskies need plenty of room to explore and run around. Their rambunctious nature means they need to be active otherwise their mischievousness may act up. While they do enjoy regular vigorous walks, they will do better with the opportunity to run and explore around in a secure area. These playful pups are perfect companions for active owners who love to jog, go on hikes, and other outdoor activities.

Exercises

As dedicated runners, Siberian Huskies need at least two hours of exercise per day. They love all games that involve running and also enjoy anything that engages their mind, like hide and seek. Dog sports and training sessions are also good ways to keep them active and as a working dog breed, jobs are a great way to keep them content. This could be anything from a jogging companion to a sled puller, which also ties into their love for running.

Grooming

Siberian Huskies have a dense, double coat that needs regular maintenance to avoid matting. Brushing two to three times a week is recommended with bathing recommended about once a month. This breed does shed a lot, particularly in the spring and autumn seasons as their coat goes through something like a molting season. It’s also good to have regular care for nails, ears, and dental hygiene to ensure your lovable companion remains healthy.
