History
Originating as far back as 800 B.C., the Lhasa Apso was originally bred as an indoor watchdog for imperial palaces and monasteries in Tibet. Its name comes from the holy city of Lhasa. Its thick coat developed as natural protection against the climate extremes of its home country, where the breed was considered sacred. Thought to bring good luck, for many years the Lhasa Apso were not allowed to leave Tibet unless given as a gift by the Dalai Lama. The first Lhasa Apsos in the U.S. were given as gifts by the 13th Dalai Lama to the noted world traveler C. Suydam Cutting in 1933. The AKC recognized the Lhasa Apso as a breed two years later, in 1935.
Temperament
The Lhasa Apso is known for its bold and confident temperament, often displaying the traits of a much larger dog despite its small size.
